Foreign student enrolment showed a decrease of 27% from 2010-11

  • Based on figures from the Ministry of Higher Education, total foreign student enrolment in Malaysia went down to 45,246 last year from 62,705 in 2010.
  • According to MOHE, aggregate data was based from survey respondents from both private and government higher learning institutions.
  • Student enrolment from China went down to 5,272 in 2011 from 7,431 in the previous year. Indonesia registered 5,963 in 2010 but slightly dipped to 4,806 whereas Nigeria reached 4,684 in 2011 from 4,274 in 2010.
  • Enrolment of Iranian students was down by 60% from 6,529 in 2010 to 3,940 in 2011.
  • Interestingly, students from the United Kingdom and Ireland picked up with 1,530 enrolments up from 101 in 2010.
  • To attract quality international students to Malaysia, the government has further regulated the application process. Foreign students need to have an offer letter first from a recognised local university or college before entering the country.
  • MOHE hopes to triple the foreign student enrolment to 200,000 by 2020 from 87,000 in 2010.
