Universiti Malaya: Only Malaysian institution in Top 200 QS World University Rankings 2012/3

  • Universiti Malaya (UM) is ranked 156 in the World University Ranking by QS. It climbed 11 places from last year.
  • UM was ranked 167th in 2011, 207th in 2010 and 180th position in 2009.
  • Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Univer-siti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), the International Islamic University Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Mara have all improved in the rankings while Universiti Putra Malaysia dropped slightly. (see table)

  • Prof Ghauth Jasmon was appointed as UM's Vice Chancellor on November 2008 and was tasked to improve UM's ranking
  • We think he has done a good job despite oppostion from some his own colleagues.
  • In August 2011, Utusan Malaysia reported 146 academic staff have resigned since Ghauth Jasmon took over because they are unhappy with his performance oriented leadership.
  • To this he said the university has hired 4 times more new staff.
  • Meanwhile, univesities in Singapore showed impressive results with National University of Singapore (NUS) ranked 25th in 2012, 28th in 2011 and 31st in 2010. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) also showed consistency. It ranked 47th in 2012 from rank 58th in 2011 and 74th in 2012.
