20,000 Students from China expected to study in Malaysia next year

  • The number of Chinese students enrolling in the US has grown tremendously. This coincides with the growing dependence on China's economy.
  • In Malaysia, students from China totalled 10,214 last year which accounts for over 6% of the 158,000 Chinese students who studied abroad last year. In 2013, the number is expected to double, reaching 20,000.
  • China's growing affluence is causing Chinese families wanting to seek a better education for their children.
  • In 2002, India was the leading source of International students enrolling 67,000 students, followed by China with 63,000 students.
  • In 2004, India remained the leading source of international students. This was also the period when Japanese enrolment dropped by 40% from 47,000 to 28,000.
  • It was only in 2008 when Chinese enrolment grew rapidly by nearly 20%  with an additional 13,000 for the first time. Korea showed signs of growth whereas Japan continued to decline.
  • In 2010, enrolment of China students toppled India’s while Korea remained stagnant.
  • By 2011, number of Indian students grew by 55% to 104,000 and Chinese students grew by 150% to 158,000 students. This was also the period when Japanese enrollment dropped by 40% from 47,000 to 28,000.
  • Nearly 750,000 students from China apply to study abroad every year.
